ALF? BarCamp? Read this First!
Several years ago, various LUGs around Alabama decided that with the departure of Atlanta Linux Showcase, we should come together and have a day of festivities. We really didn't know what to expect. But the turn out and activities helped create several successful Alabama LUG Fests. We hope to continue the same success this year and spread the fun to even more people who are interested in having fun with other persons interested in the same topics.
The last LUGFest was organized and hosted by SALUG in Mobile and it was a resounding success! Well, it is BALU's turn to play host for LUGFest 2007 and we have some great ideas going so far – but we need your help.
LUGFest 2007 will take the form of a BarCamp -- a BarCamp is an "un-conference" where people interested in a wide range of topics come together to teach and learn. Unfamiliar with the un-conference format? Here's the idea in a nutshell: Rather than having scheduled speakers, everyone pitches session ideas a few weeks before the BarCamp. Those sessions are put on a schedule, and lots of little groups form for intense group learning. Everyone is expected to teach, to talk, to participate. Yeah, it's different from a regular conference - but it works!
The idea of an un-conference came together when people realized the best times they were having at conferences were the times between sessions - where people with like interests could meet ad hoc. The goal of BarCamp is to facilitate this type of interaction for an entire day. We supply the food, the space, the wireless, the projectors - you show up to teach and learn.
The LUGFest 2007 wiki site is up and ready to be updated – simply add your name to the Participants (aka Campers) section. We also need attendees to present on a topic. Not all attendees have to present, but the more the better. So if you are willing to present on a topic of your choosing (as long as it is somewhat related to Linux, OpenSource, and technology in general) please add the presentation topic and your name to the Proposed Sessions section below. In addition, if you have any ideas for presentation, please add these to the Topics I would like to hear about list. The presentations should be approximately 30 minutes or 50 minutes in length. Please let us know (via the wiki) about your plans to present by 29 August 2007 so we can get the location and other details finalized. If we do not have enough presenters, the event will be cancelled. Remember, you can partner up with others to do a presentation – you don't have to go it alone.
We will try to have a LUG Warz like the previous years and will definitely have the hardware swap. Maybe a couple workshops and some general help sessions as well.
- LUG Warz - A trivia-style geek game where we pit various LUGs (and sometimes just complete strangers who have formed a team!) against each other in a true test of Geekdom. Finally, reading all those Slashdot stories, watching every episode of Star Trek, and reading the Linux Kernel code comments will come in handy! Win some neat prizes and have a blast seeing who truly is the geekier LUG!
- A hardware swap for those who want to get rid of that junky i486 or that Commodore 64 that you never seem to have time to tinker with. Buy, sell, trade. Anything goes so long as it doesn't smell bad and it isn't totally encrusted with dust. Be sure to bring some extra cash, or make some extra cash selling those parts you never use.
